Ever watch a sport where a backup player enters a game only to perform at a level much lower than those getting the frequent playing time? Is it because that player truly is a bench player who has less talent than the ones getting the reps? Or could it have something to do with the fact that they are being asked to perform without the proper skills, coaching, or training? Things such as lack of training, warm up periods, stretching, or enough game time experience could all play a part in why a backup player may under perform.
The same questions can be asked about the equipment in your fleet whether it be on road or off road equipment. Companies in the northeast and other areas strongly affected by the below freezing weather are no stranger to the additive business, but are they doing enough for their bench/backup players?
Sometimes there needs to be more thought put into your winter additive choice methods if you have equipment that is not run regularly and sitting in the cold without any startups for extended periods of time. Are you using additive that includes chemistry to help disperse wax during extended engine shutdowns? It is important that your additive not sink to the bottom of the tank, and if your equipment is not running frequently it may very well do so.
Whether it be a bulldozer or an on-road vehicle it is important that you use an additive that will help your less used equipment, AKA Bench Players perform at the same level as your frequent starters. Make sure you are using an additive that will continuously blend with the diesel fuel even during long periods of shutdowns. Also be sure to replace the filters in your equipment as well as at your fuel pump dispensers.
