FMCSA Extends COVID-19 Waivers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is the lead government agency responsible for regulating and providing safety oversight of Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs), FMCSA’s mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses, according to their website.

When the coronavirus started to impact the United States in 2020, the FMCSA issued COVID-19 waivers to truckers nationwide to keep these essential workers on the road.

According to fleetowner.com, The FMCSA extension was previously set to expire on February 28, but continues to cover the extended emergency relief for the following categories only:

  • Livestock and livestock feed
  • Medical supplies and equipment related to testing, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19.
  • Vaccines, constituent products, and medical supplies and equipment including ancillary supplies/kits for the administration of vaccines, related to the prevention of COVID-19.
  • Supplies and equipment necessary for community safety, sanitation, and prevention of community transmission of COVID-19 such as masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, soap, and disinfectants. Food, paper products and other groceries for emergency restocking of distribution centers or stores

The FMCSA is also allowing states to extend truck drivers’ Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), as well as Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). The previous waiver was set to expire February 28 but is now effective starting March 1 through May 31.
