Driver Seat Importance

Oil changes, truck inspections, tire rotations and new brakes are all part of typical truck maintenance. One thing that is often missed when replacing or inspecting parts of a semi-truck is the driver’s seat, which is one of the most important parts of the cab. Truck drivers can spend over 40 hours a week seated, which can be very harsh on the body. Having the proper seat set-up and support can reduce sprains, strains, muscle pulls and body aches.

Semi-trucks do not have the same standard seat like other vehicles on the road. They have suspension seats, which are seats that have springs to make them go up and down to reduce the impacts of road conditions. According the FleetOwner Magazine, “most original equipment manufacturer (OEM) seats are manufactured with the minimum: low seatbacks, narrow cushions, vinyl upholstery, and little adjustability.” However there are options for drivers or companies who wish to pay for upgraded driver seats.

Vehicle Service Pros listed four factors to consider when choosing a replacement seat.

  1. Base assembly height
  2. Comfort level
  3. Making sure it has an isolator which controls the amount of back-and-forth rocking and minimizes vibrations.
  4. Extra features and add-ons, the options are endless when it comes to choosing a seat. Vinyl, leather, tilt functionality, upper and lower lumbar support, etc.

Replacing or upgrading a seat is an investment that is worthwhile and should be maintained just like brakes and tires.
