Did you know that April is National Distracted Driver Awareness month? Every day at least nine Americans die and 100 are injured in crashes caused by distracted driving. Many things are to blame; cell phones, touch screens, the environment and technology all pose a threat to our safety while on the road. Distracted Driver Awareness month is in an effort to recognize all the dangers our truckers face on a day-to-day basis.
There are many types of distractions, but three of the most common are;
1. Visual distraction this is when a driver looks at anything other than the road.
2. Manual distraction could be texting on a cell phone, turning the radio station, eating or taking your hands off the wheel for one split second.
3. Cognitive distraction is when a driver mind is not focused especially while driving.
While every employer encourages their drivers to be safe while driving, they often put their drivers new and old through vigorous training to make sure they are prepared for the road. Workplace policies and employee education play a high part in the overall safety of a company. Many mandate driver safety courses before an applicant is even hired. There are many resources to promote safe driving, online, virtual, and classroom training.
Everybody wants to be safe, why not make it a priority for every day to be Driver Safety Awareness.
