From Emissions Challenge to Offset Opportunity
For a major transportation Company to establish itself as a forward-thinking and environmentally conscious company, they need to address the high volume of emissions generated from their over-the-road trucking shipments, which were standing in the way of their sustainability goals, including:
- Reducing their overall carbon footprint
- Setting an example for transportation industry
- Aligning with the values of their customers and other stakeholders
The Carbon Offsets Project: Finding A Sustainable Solution
Being transportation experts, the company quickly came to a solution for reducing over-the-road trucking emissions by utilizing intermodal transport leveraging more efficient ways of moving shipments. Specifically, they intermodal transport utilizing rail cut the emissions that would be created by over-the-road trucking by over 60% and was also 2.5% more efficient in terms of delivery timing and logistics. Based on these advantages, they invested in an extensive program toto move more shipments to rail. The program provides options and flexibility to customers by enabling them to elect to move their shipments to rail, and then offset the remaining emissions.
Leading an Industry into the Future
This carbon offsets project and initiative has proven a success for the company and is an excellent example of an emissions reduction offset project based on intermodal transport. Their efforts are still producing measurable results—in fact, in 2021 alone, they were able to eliminate about 3.49 million metric tons of CO2e from the atmosphere while helping their customers meet their sustainability goals. Notably, the company now also helps other transportation companies both in leading by example and partnering with them to provide these services to a wider scope of customers.
